Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are wonderful companion birds. They are smart and affectionate. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They can be bored quickly and find ways to entertain themselves even if their owners aren't engaging with them enough often. Macaws that aren't socialized can become aggressive, and even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw does not feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who enjoy playing, interacting, and climb. They must spend at least 2 to 3-hours a day outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, listening to music and learning tricks. They love visiting playgrounds and parks as much as hiking, local eateries and bars. In addition to being a fun pet they also make loving pets for children.
Despite their adorable nature however, these birds can be loud and can be a distraction to those living near. They can make loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be disruptive in condominiums and apartments, or near young children who might be scared by their noise.
The species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. Because of this, the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases and tricks. It is not an easy process, and it's important that the owner is patient and understands that this is not something to be undertaken lightly. The use of positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and help to correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to cease performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita might suffer the same fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to return to the ocean.
The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her at risk. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, overexerting her by putting her through head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and harming her immune system. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her to be a family member in a plan that would eventually take her to the open water. The plan would have included a facility located on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the remainder of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who are close to their family members until they die. Lolita who has been alone at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is being released into the wild. The decision comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary in which she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even meet the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately, these plans came too late for the beloved whale who died on Friday from what was believed to be a kidney issue.
